How can I extend the root volume of my server ?

  1. Prepare yourself with the Openstack documentation (Volume Edit/Resize, Boot from Volume, Associate Floating IP)

  2. Make sure that the server was created with "Delete Volume on Instance Delete = No" otherwise the volume will be deleted during the next steps - if you are unsure, ask for this via support@gwdg.de with reference to the ID of the server.

  3. If you are sure about point 2 you can delete the server - the volume and the data will be kept - the internal IP, MAC and the hostkey will change. Remember the used flavor and if necessary the used FloatingIP (public IP).

  4. After the server is deleted you can increase the volume size

  5. Once the volume is enlarged, create a new server using the volume from 4 and the information from 3.

  6. Finally, link the server with a floating IP if needed.
